Virginia Beach Newborn Sessions: Studio vs. In-Home

Newborn

As a Virginia Beach newborn photographer, I offer my clients the choice between an in-home session or a session in my natural-lit studio (located in the Great Neck area of VB!). Both options are lovely and will give beautiful results — there are just a number of factors to consider when choosing which one is right for your family during this precious season of life.

The Light – I listed this first because it truly is the most important factor when it comes to my style of photography. I use natural light (sunlight!) for all my photos, which gives that bright, airy, + timeless look to my photos. The more natural light there is with indoor photos, the better!! My studio (available for you to use with any newborn sessions booked with me!) offers consistent natural light and will ensure that your photos have the airy look that you see in my portfolio.

If you are thinking of having your newborn photos in your home, start out by considering how much light you have in your home. Think specifically about the room(s) you may want to shoot in, which typically are the nursery, master bedroom or family room. Watch how much sunlight that room gets through out the day, based on the number of windows, window placement, and where the sun rises and sets. My clients are always welcome to send me pictures and I can help determine this with you!

The Colors + Decor – In addition to the light, the colors + surroundings play a major factor in how your final images will look. Typically neutral colors (in both your paint + decor!) photograph best. If the rooms you would like to photograph in have more bold, vibrant colors – it can be harder to achieve the bright + airy style. This does not mean you need to paint your home 😉 – it may just be a factor to consider when choosing an in-home session or a studio session. My studio is painted bright white which provides a clean, timeless backdrop, and I also have furniture/props that also use the same neutral palette. This ensures a consistent classic feel to the images.

If you are thinking that you would like an in-home session, another perk is having the setup and decor in that nursery that you worked so hard to create documented! In-home sessions help to really tell the story of just how life is at this time for your family!

Consider the Stressors – As a mama of four myself, I know firsthand how stressful (and beautiful!) those first few weeks with a newborn can be. There is no need to add stress, so this is absolutely a factor to think about when considering whether you would like to have your session in your home or at the studio. If you choose the studio, you don’t have to worry about tidying up your home or decluttering — all you have to do is show up and I will have taken care of that for you! I will invite you to make yourself at home and will provide toys for older siblings, if that’s applicable to you!

On the other hand, getting everyone out and in the car may seem more stressful to you, and if so, you may want to consider me coming to you! With in-home sessions, I still bring baskets and other props needed for the photos so you will absolutely still have access to all of that.

No matter which option you choose, rest assured that you will end up with beautiful photos that will document this sweet, fleeting season of life. Please know that you can ALWAYS reach out to me and I will offer my professional opinion on which newborn session would be the best fit for you!
